Syrian hamsters, often referred to as golden hamsters, are highly valued for their various colors and patterns. This variety is the result of years of selective breeding, making each hamster unique. Let’s explore together the different colors, types of fur, and patterns of these adorable rodents.

Long and short fur: visual impact on color

In addition to different colors, Syrian hamsters can also have varied types of fur, such as long fur (angoras) or short. The length of fur can influence how color appears on the animal.

Short fur and long fur

  • Short fur: short-furred hamsters have a smooth and soft coat that requires minimal maintenance. A weekly brushing with a soft brush is enough to remove dead fur.
  • Long fur: also known as “teddy bear” hamsters, these hamsters have long and silky fur that requires regular brushing to avoid tangles. Males often have longer manes. Use a special brush for long-haired pets and be sure to cut tangles with rounded-tip scissors if necessary. Sand baths can also help keep their fur clean and silky.

Satin and rex fur

  • Satin fur: shiny and lustrous, satin fur gives a radiant appearance but can be more delicate. Avoid chemicals when cleaning the habitat to preserve the shine of the fur.
  • Rex fur: the hairs are curly and give a frizzy appearance, with curly whiskers as well. Rex hamsters may have less dense fur, making them more sensitive to cold. Ensure their environment is well heated during winter.

Patterns of Syrian hamsters

Patterns refer to the different markings or designs that can be seen on the fur of hamsters. Here are some common patterns:

  • Solid: a uniform color all over the body. This pattern is often preferred for its simplicity and elegance.
  • Roan: a white coat mixed with colors. This pattern is usually heterogeneous and can vary greatly from individual to individual.
  • Band: features a white band running across the middle of the body, adding a striking visual contrast.
  • Dominant spot: a primarily white body with patches of various colors. This pattern is popular for its diversity and unique appearance.
  • Tortoiseshell: only found in females, this pattern combines yellow and black or brown spots, offering a combination of vibrant and interesting colors. Tortoiseshell coloring is due to a complex interaction between several genes. Females often carry this coloration due to the XX chromosomal setup, allowing for a greater diversity of color combinations compared to males (XY).

Colors of Syrian hamsters

Agouti colors

Agouti hamsters have a base color with distinct markings on the cheeks and a lighter belly. This term refers to a coat with a darker base and lighter tips, giving a speckled effect.

In the world of hamsters, the agouti color results from a specific combination of genes. This type of fur includes a light brown base with black pigments called “ticking” that speckle the entire body, hence providing this rich and varied texture.

Here are some examples of agouti colors:

  • Golden: the natural color of Syrian hamsters, often referred to as the “wild” color. This fur is often associated with good health and vitality.
  • Cinnamon: a warm brown with a lighter belly. This color is particularly appreciated for its warmth and inviting appearance.
  • Rust: a deep reddish-brown. Hamsters of this color can appear very distinctive and unique.
  • Silver gray: a pale gray with silver highlights, adding an elegant and sophisticated touch.
  • Dark gray: a darker shade of gray, often perceived as mysterious and attractive.

Solid colors

Unlike agouti hamsters, solid-colored hamsters have a uniform shade all over the body. Among the solid colors, we find :

  • Black: a deep and intense black, often associated with classic elegance.
  • Cream: a soft and uniform tone, often with black or red eyes. This color is highly sought after for its gentle and friendly appearance.
  • Chocolate: a rich and deep brown, evoking warmth and friendliness.
  • White: completely white with sometimes red eyes, giving a pure and immaculate appearance.
  • Albino hamster
    • An albino hamster has an entirely white coat, accompanied by red or pink eyes. This phenotype is the result of a total lack of pigmentation caused by a recessive gene.
    • Broken white and cream: unlike albinos, broken white or cream hamsters still possess some pigments in their fur, resulting in a slightly warmer and subtler coloration. These shades create a unique visual softness, often accentuated by touches of gray or beige on certain parts of the body.
  • Sable: a golden brown color, often associated with a royal and sophisticated appearance.

Change in fur color

It is important to note that the color of Syrian hamsters’ fur may change slightly with age. These color variations are natural and should not be a cause for concern as long as the change is gradual and not accompanied by fur loss. Seasonal changes can also influence the shade of the fur, and a nutrient-rich diet can help maintain a vibrant and healthy color.

Differences between sexes

Female and male Syrian hamsters can be differentiated by their flank glands and genital anatomy. However, fur color is generally not influenced by sex, except for the tortoiseshell patterns, which are found only in females. Females may also exhibit more pronounced territorial behaviors than males.

Eye colors

The eye colors of Syrian hamsters can vary depending on their fur. For example, cream-colored hamsters may have black, red, or ruby eyes. Certain fur colors are specifically associated with red eyes, such as lilac, honey, or fawn. The eye color can also affect light sensitivity, with red-eyed hamsters often being more sensitive to bright lights.
